Every material has a unique specific resistance
Specific electrical quantities are of great importance in industry and technology. They serve the Characterization of different materials and their division into certain categories, such as Insulators, semiconductors or conductors. These sizes are independent of the shape and dimensions of the object in question and therefore describe a clear quality feature.
The Hiresta UX, Loresta-GX II and Loresta-FX devices enable accurate measurement of specific surface resistance and volume resistance.
The Hiresta series serves the high-resistance range (103-1014Ω), the Loresta series the low-resistance (10-4-107Ω). These systems are complemented by the Powder Resistivity System PD-600 for measuring the resistivity of powder.
Volume resistance
The volume resistivity (Ω·cm) is the resistance per unit volume and has various names depending on the scientific application. For example, specific volume resistivity in materials science, specific resistance in electrical engineering, resistivity in physics, etc. This physical quantity is specific to a substance (listed in scientific reference books) and serves as absolute measure of the resistivity of many materials. Surface resistance (Ω/□,Ω/sq.), on the other hand, is the resistance per unit area, also known as plate resistance, and is used in the field of coating, insulation, etc.

4-point and ring electrode measurement methods
These can be determined using two different measuring methods: The 4-point measurement method and Ring electrode measurement method.


Both methods are widely used for object characterization. The four-point measurement method was first described by L.B. Valdes in 1954 for measuring semiconductors. In 1957, his notes were expanded by F.M. Smits with regard to correction factors for determining specific quantities. Subsequently, further additions followed for various special cases (e.g., semicircular patterns).
In these works, highly idealized objects were basically described and measured. Mostly rectangular or circular patterns. The measuring position was preferably in the middle of the sample or in places that allow the electrical quantity to be easily corrected.
The 4-pole or ring electrode measuring head of the measuring devices eliminates line and connector resistances as well as contact resistances. In contrast to the widely used 2-pole measurement, this results in significantly more precise resistance measurements.
Correction factor
For these idealized objects a general correction factor developed with which the specific variables can be determined from the electrical resistance. This correction is necessary because the electric field changes depending on the geometry of the sample or measuring position.
Nittoseiko Analytech's resistivity meters are based on both measurement methods, but with significantly more complex correction factors that allow for the correction of specific parameters on samples of varying dimensions, with freely selectable measurement positions. This enables versatile use in diverse industrial sectors.
